About Aurai Assembly Elections Constituency

Aurai assembly segment is in Muzaffarpur district and belongs to the Muzaffarpur Lok Sabha constituency. A total of 2,56,567 eligible voters are present in this assembly segment. of these, 1,38,008 are men and 1,18,557 women. Belpakauna, Tehwara, Berai North, Barri, Changel, Bansghatta, Hathauri, Pahsaul, Jajaur, Nagwara, Katai, Lakhanpur and Khanguradih gram panchayats of Katra community development block; Aurai CD block are covered by Aurai assembly constituency.

Electoral History of Aurai Constituency in Bihar

Aurai, belongs to the Muzaffarpur Lok Sabha constituency. A total of 2, 56,567 eligible voters are present in this assembly segment of these, 1, 38,008 are men and 1, 18,557 women. Aurai assembly constituency covers Bandhapura, Belpakauna, Tehwara, Berai North, Barri, Changel, Bansghatta, Hathauri, Pahsaul, Jajaur, Nagwara, Katai, Lakhanpur and Khanguradih gram panchayats of Katra community development block and Aurai CD block.

  One of the eleven assembly constituencies located in the Muzaffarpur district of Bihar, Aurai Is currently held by Ram Surat Rai of the BJP who won the seat in the last assembly polls to Bihar in 2010. In that election, while Ram Surat Rai polled 38422 votes, his nearest rival, Surendra Kumar of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), received 26681 votes and was followed by Ganesh Prasad Yadav, a former six- term Aurai MLA, who secured 13507 votes. Ganesh Prasad Yadav entered the fray as a nominee of the Deve Gowda led Janata Dal (Secular) after the seat was allotted to the BJP under the seat sharing arrangement with the Nitish headed Janata Dal (United).

   Earlier Arjun Ray of the JD (U) had won both the elections to the Aurai assembly constituency in 2005. While he had won the November election by defeating his nearest independent rival Abhay Kumar by a margin of 31370 votes, he had trounced Ganesh Prasad Yadav, then an RJD member, by 31187 votes. In 2000, Ganesh Prasad Yadav, who was then a JD (U) nominee, had defeated Arjun Ray, who contested on the ticket of the RJD, by 12887 votes.

  Ganesh Prasad Yadav had also claimed the Aurai assembly seat in 1977, 1980, 1985, 1990 and 1995 as a member of the Janata Dal which later disintegrated into several splinter groups such as RJD, JD (U), Biju Janata Dal (BJD) of Naveen Patnayak, JD(S), Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) of Om Prakash Chautala, Rashtirya Lok Dal of Ajit Singh.

  Aurai seat went in favour of the Congress last time in 1972 when its candidate Ram Babu Singh was elected from the constituency.

  Aurai is one of the six assembly constituencies that combine to form the parliamentary constituency of Muzaffarpur which is currently represented by Ajay Nishad of the BJP who won the seat by defeating his nearest Congress rival Akhilesh Prasad Singh by a massive margin of 2, 22,422 votes in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections that elected the Narendra Modi government at the centre.

  Other five assembly constituencies that fall under the Muzaffarpur Lok Sabha seat are Gaighat, Bochahan, Sakra, Kurhani and Muzaffarpur.

Traditional rivals at it again

Sitting BJP MLA Ramsurat Rai will take on Surendra Kumar of RJD in Aurai constituency. Both are traditional rivals as they faced each other in the last assembly election too. In the assembly, Aurai is represented by Ram Surat Rai of BJP. Rai bagged 38,422 votes in the assembly election held in November 2010. Surendra Kumar of RJD got 26,681 votes.
It is said that RJD leader Harishchandra Prasad Yadav from Aurai submitted a voluminous bio-data of 300 pages to the party office. He wanted to impress party chief Lalu Prasad for getting the party ticket. However, RJD has given the ticket to Surendra Kumar in Aurai that is part of Muzaffarpur Lok Sabha constituency.
