A most important seat of power Chittorgarh fort is situated 175 km from Udaipur.Named after Chitrangad Maurya it was given to Bappa Rawal founder of Sisodiya dyanstry as a dowry from Solanki dynasty in 8th century AD.Chittorgarh boast of 700 acres of land full of stunning palaces, temples and other fortifications.
Standing on a 180 m high hill it is a massive structure. There are total seven gates Padan Pol, Bhairon Pol, Hanuman Pol, Ganesh Pol, Jorla Pol, Lakshman Pol, to the main gate Rampol. Between the second and third gate there are two Chattris or cenotaphs built in honor of Jaimull and Kulla, heroes of 1568 AD siege by Emperor Akbar. The main gate is Surajpol meaning the Gate of Sun. There are many palaces with prominent Rajput architectural features like Rana Kumbha Palace, the Fateh Prakash Palace, the Tower of Victory and Rani Padmini's Palace. The fortress of Chittorgarh is the symbol of pride and chivalry of the Rajputs.
The two towers known as the 'Kirti Stambh' or Tower of Fame and the 'Vijay Stambh' or Tower of Victory are the other main places of tourist interest. One can see other beautiful temples, reservoirs and palaces constructed between the 9th and 17th centuries AD. Fort complex also has Jain temples. Gaumukh' is a rock shaped in the form of cow's mouth from which water follows. You should visit Bhimtal Tank, Neelkanth Mahadev Temple, Meera Temple, Kumbha Shyam Temple and Kalika Mata Temple in the close vicinity of the fort.
